British sellers are making over £2.5 billion a month on Amazon

Research from Thrasio and SmartScout reveals how 13,483 UK Amazon sellers now account for 5.5% of the UK retail sector’s monthly turnover.

An analysis of British Amazon sellers by online consumer goods company Thrasio has revealed how a new wave of entrepreneurs are driving the country’s retail sector.

The insights team at the next-generation consumer packaged goods (CPG) company found that 13,483 sellers operate in the UK, making almost £2.5 billion a month in sales or 5.5% of the entire UK retail (including fuel sales) sector’s turnover in June.

Unsurprisingly, London leads the way, with £263 million in revenue generated each month, followed by £66 million in both Birmingham and Manchester, £28 million in Nottingham, and £14 million in Bristol. The highest average revenues are made by sellers of books, clothing and pet supplies.

The most popular categories for UK sellers include groceries, ‘DIY and tools,’ ‘home and kitchen’ products and ‘sports and outdoors’. Nearly 5,500 sellers operate businesses in these categories alone.

The data also revealed interesting regional differences, with major cities leading the way in each category. These variations can perhaps be explained by the industrial heritage in each city. For example, Birmingham, long the centre of UK manufacturing, is now the biggest seller of tools, while Manchester, historically at the heart of cotton production, is the leading seller in clothing. London, with its position as arguably the world’s fashion capital, is top for beauty products.

“This data shows the enormous opportunities that Amazon is creating for sellers across the UK,” said Jim Mann, director of UK acquisitions at Thrasio. “Whether you’re selling football equipment from your basement in Manchester or living in Birmingham and creating the next great e-commerce DIY shop, sellers on Amazon’s marketplace can follow their passions and make money doing so. Thrasio is extremely excited to be part of that ecosystem, and we look forward to sharing our expertise with Britain’s seller community.”
