Cult entertainment store spices up Skipton

Geekery is a complex art. It covers all bases from television franchises, to comic books and superheroes, bringing audiences out of this world and back.

Nicola Jankowicz was struck by entertainment store ‘PIQ!’ whilst on holiday in Florida and decided that she had to have a slice of the action.

After starting her own website, Geek Uneek, Nicola found she enjoyed sourcing gifts and memorabilia so much that opening her own shop was the natural step up.

After approaching the Business Enterprise Fund, Nicola received a Start Up Loan to get her business off the ground.

With the premises in Craven Court Shopping Centre in Skipton, Geek Uneek has already attracted plenty of footfall and offers something for people of all ages, from t-shirts to novelty kitchenware. Bobbing head figurines of popular characters are especially popular.

“The day before Father’s Day was one of our busiest,” Nicola said. “The t-shirts have been doing especially well too so we’re thinking of expanding our range.”

Nicola enjoys following the trends and finding unique items for her shop. To promote the business she has even sent her 15-year-old son, Ryan around the town dressed as a Star Wars Storm Trooper!

“Next time we’re getting Darth Vader too!” Nicola said. “People have said there are too many coffee shops around and are happy we have something different to offer.”

Nicola has visited conventions round the country to raise her profile and enjoy the atmosphere. “We had a lot of interest at the Horror Convention in Sheffield”.

Since opening 3 months ago, it’s been non stop for Nicola and Ryan, who works every Saturday.

“BEF have been really helpful, without them we wouldn’t have been able to open the shop. The next plan is to employ someone part time so I can get some rest!”

If you’re in Skipton look out for Geek Uneek, you’ll find something quite unique!
